Our Fellowship Program

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University has a fully accredited program in Neonatal‑Perinatal Medicine. The 3-year program is divided between clinical and academic activities in a manner that allows the fellow to quickly become comfortable with the environment and the faculty, making it easy to subsequently select an academic mentor and research focus.

Your clinical experience will take place at a single site, ECU Health Medical Center. This 900‑bed hospital is the regional referral center for 29 counties of eastern North Carolina. Our 132‑bed James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital houses a 71‑bed Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit , across two floors of the Children’s Hospital. Annually, 1000 admissions are drawn from an in‑house delivery service of 3,500 births and 20,000 regional births. Our clinical services are fully supported by board‑certified Neonatologists and all Pediatric and Surgical subspecialties. Our high‑risk follow‑up clinic sees 400 infants yearly.

Academic responsibilities of the fellowship program include presentations at a regular series of Research Conferences, Weekly Review Conferences, Pathology Case Reviews, Physiology Talks, and Journal Clubs. Although there is an emphasis on clinical research, opportunities exist throughout the Clinical and Basic Science Departments.
